Night Stand Makeover

A friend of mine was spring cleaning her apartment and decided to give me this night stand. Made of mostly solid pine wood, I saw great potential here. I especially enjoyed the ribbed detail on the front and the hardware. It had some condition issues, so I decided to give it a makeover.

top surface had some cracking
I removed the hardware and gave all the pieces a good sanding, including the hardware.

I used wood filler to fill in the crack, let it dry and sanded it down.

Turning the stand over, revealed that at one time, there had been bun feet,
which had somehow gone missing. Instead of splurging on new feet, I
bought 1" nail in gliders. This allowed the piece to move smoothly along
the floor and give it a small lift directly off the floor.

Once the stand, drawers and hardware were all sanded, I vacuumed the dust up and began to paint.

First coat of paint.

I used two coats of Glidden "Black Onyx" satin paint, painted with a poly brush. Once the paint dried, I used an 80 grit sandpaper to go over the edges, exposing the raw wood. This gives the piece dimension.

Folding the sandpaper in half, I ran it through each ribbed
section to bring out a little more distressing detail.
While the stand dried, I used a small artist brush and
carefully painted the handles, sanding in the grooves to
match the stand.

I then used 2 coats of Minwax Wipe-On Satin Polyurethane to seal the paint. I also went over the wooden hardware pieces.

All finished!
